New FCC Ruling May Affect Your Church's Wireless Microphones
Thursday, June 17, 2010

A Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruling now requires all churches, businesses and organizations using wireless microphones operating between 698 and 806 Megahertz to stop doing so, effective June 12. The rights to this frequency range will be designated for licensed use only. If your church is using wireless microphones that display a frequency number between 698 and 806 MHz you could be subject to civil or criminal penalties after the upcoming deadline.

Many microphones and receivers can be tuned to frequencies outside of this range (most likely to the 500 MHz range), but some cannot. Devices that cannot be tuned outside of the restricted range must be replaced. For a list of such devices visit: http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicrophones/manufacturers.html. If your church owns microphones/receivers that appear on this list contact the manufacturer before ordering a replacement (the above link also includes contact information for most manufacturers). Many manufacturers are offering trade in rebates on equipment affected by the regulation. Some churches are choosing to donate their equipment to churches in countries where their frequency range is not restricted.

If you have additional questions regarding this transition contact your audio equipment supplier or the Texas Conference Communication Department.
